I was 18, and had come to NYC for school that September; I had the radio tuned to WNEW-FM and the DJ was Vin Scelsa.
I think it was around 10 PM that Vin cut into the song he was playing and said John Lennon had been shot; it was several minutes later that he confirmed Lennon was dead, and spent the entire night until dawn playing a tribute to the late Lennon.
I tweeted this morning: "The takeaway from the 39th anniversary of #johnlennon's murder should be that we STILL don't have effective #guncontrol laws. #GunControlNow"
(After staying up all night, I made my way up to the Dakota early in the morning, to find a horde of mourners already there.)
