I was still a kid, living in Garland, Texas, at the time. I remember there was a guy just down the block from us who wrote the following in shoe polish across his rear windshield: "John Lennon, 1940 - 1980". It stayed on until it faded.
The U.S. would have been a very different place, had he lived. I'm convinced of it.
I was 18, and had come to NYC for school that September; ;I had the radio tuned to WNEW-FM and the DJ was Vin Scelsa.
I think it was around 10 PM that Vin cut into the song he was playing and said John Lennon had been shot; it was several minutes later that he confirmed Lennon was dead, and spent the entire night until dawn playing a tribute to the late Lennon.
I tweeted this morning: "The takeaway from the 39th anniversary of #johnlennon's murder should be that we STILL don't have effective #guncontrol laws. #GunControlNow"
"How long shall we kill our prophets, while we stand aside and look?/Some say it's just a part of it/We got to fulfill the Book..." -Redemption Song by Bob Marley
I was just trying to edit this, and found you had already replied. Here's what I was trying to edit it as:

(After staying up all night, I made my way up to the Dakota early in the morning, to find a horde of mourners already there.)
